This was our first time "glamping" and it was a truly memorable experience despite the unforgiving heat (38-40 degreees Celsius).
STAFF
The staff at Chobe Under Canvas are all male so laundry service is not offered here (it's culturally unacceptable for men to wash women's lingerie). The whole team was very friendly and easy to get along with.
ACCOMMODATION
The tent was already set up when we arrived. It comfortably fits a queen-sized bed with two side tables with plenty of room to walk around. There's a table set up with clean water, a basin and toiletries. There's a rack for body towels, face towels, and hand towels. There's a shower with limited supply of water but enough for two people to each take two showers a day. The toilet flushes but takes about 10-15 mins between uses to fill up. I do wish there were battery-operated fans as the tents got extremely hot and stuffy. It was unbearable at times given the 40 degree Celsius heat. The hot breeze was constant and felt like you were standing in front of an oven.
WILD LIFE
The wild life in Chobe was fantastic. We were worried to glamp in the national park as the animals are free to roam as they please, but it was very safe. The staff took every precaution to ensure we were never in harms way. We saw plenty of wild life on our game drives (e.g. leopards, lions, giraffes, impalas, rhinos, hippos, monkeys, buffalos). The park is vast and the scenery is so beautiful. You can see Namibia as you drive along the river.
ACTIVITIES
We went on a boat cruise down the Chobe River which was one of our favorite activities! The boat had swivels chairs with professional cameras (EOS 80D) attached to it so that guests could take 800+ photos during the 3 hour boat ride. At the end of the trip we each got to take the memory card home. A great experience that allows you to see animals from a different perspective!
FOOD
The food here wasn't great. We understand that the chef had limitations in terms of equipment and ingredients, but we were expecting much more (in terms of quality) considering how much we paid per night. We did enjoy sitting together with all the other guests, camp managers and guides at each meal though. It was a great way to get to know each other. We had some great conversations!
OTHERS
We went to Chobe in October, which is the hottest time to go. The scorching heat is unbearable at times so don't forget to bring your sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. There is no gift shop here. There are also A LOT of flies and mosquitoes.
