Nice and clean hostel, very close to plaza de armas. Rooms are comfortable. We stayed 4 nights. Senora was very friendly and helped us a lot about storing our equipment. We are glad to choose this place in arequipa

Sadly the worst experience we ever had with an "hotel".
Starting with our arrival the problems started to unfold. No one at the reception can speak a single word in English. With big posters in the entrance advertising, in English, that you are able to book tours in the hotel are truly misleading. Because we arrived late in the evening all we wanted to do is pay for our 4 night stay and go to bed. Apparently our reservation was not listed so we had trouble explaining we had a 4 night reservation. We tried showing our booking confirmation and emails. Problem was, that the receptionist didn't even know what a night at their hotel would cost. When the receptionist spotted the 80 USD on our reservation email we showed her she wanted to charge us 80 Soles. We had to explain to her that USD means US Dollars. When we finally came to the paying part we were unable to pay via Visa. The small visa device had to be connected to her personal smartphone and then she demanded our DNI to confirm the payment. At this moment we were already only communicating via Google Translate. We had to explain to her that the DNI number is the number found on Peruvian ID cards. After going through every single number on our German passports and ID she was puzzled why it didn't work. After about 20+ minutes we gave up and said we will pay in cash when we leave.
Already frustrated we finally got our keys and finally entered our room. The beds were actually alright but the bathroom was horrible. The bathroom was tiny with leaking pipes and generally an disgusting smell in the air. Everytime we turned on the tap, the bathroom was flooded due to the pipes down at the sink leaking.
Because one of their WiFi access points did not work, we only got a little bit outside our room.
After our 4 night stay at the hotel not a single time we had room service in our room. By the time we left we had a huge pile of water bottles overflowing our bin. Room service was something advertised and promise when we booked the place.
While the hotel is in walking distance of the city center I'd recommend staying in one of the many Hotel's or Hostel's located in the same street.
We don't even know how this place got the status of hotel in the first place.

Not recommended at all. No breakfast, they have only one fork, knife. My mum wanted to use it, the girl ran after her to tell her that she can't use it it is only for the volunteers! Unbelievable and unacceptable. No towels. To avoid

I do not write a lot of reviews, nor do I hand out 5 stars. However, folks here are so nice, the place is so well kept, it is family owned and operated; and with the price, location, and beautiful interior/courtyard the Gran Hotel earns my approval and then some. I do not need much, beauty in simplicity thrills me...that is all ;-)
